Why visit Cap de Formentor?
Cap de Formentor is the northernmost point of Mallorca, where the Serra de Tramuntana mountains meet the sea in a series of sheer cliffs, pine forests and turquoise coves. Known as the meeting point of the winds, the peninsula stretches from Port de Pollença to the lighthouse at its tip.
The journey is as much the experience as the destination. The road winds through tunnels cut into the rock, past vertiginous drops and a sequence of miradors that offer some of the most photographed views in the Balearic Islands.
The lighthouse at the end has stood since the 19th century, and the walk around the headland gives a strong sense of the raw, exposed scale of Mallorca’s northern coast. Vehicle access is restricted in summer, so planning ahead matters.
What to see at Cap de Formentor
01
Mirador des Colomer
The first major viewpoint on the peninsula road has a short walk to a panoramic platform above dramatic cliffs and the bay of Port de Pollença.
02
Formentor Lighthouse
The lighthouse at the tip of the peninsula gives wide open sea views and a strong sense of the cape’s exposed position.
03
Platja de Formentor
A pine-backed beach on the sheltered side of the peninsula, with calm, clear water and one of Mallorca’s most scenic settings.
04
The peninsula road
Hairpin bends, rock tunnels and sudden sea views make the road itself one of the reasons people come to Formentor.
Visitor tips
- In summer, private vehicles may be restricted during daytime hours. Use the shuttle bus from Port de Pollença or arrive before restrictions begin.
- Visit in spring or autumn for easier access and fewer crowds.
- Arriving by boat from Port de Pollença gives a different view of the cliffs.
- Bring water and sun protection because facilities are limited beyond the beach area.
